Programs  Aboriginal Best Start

Best Start is a whole of government early years project auspice by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECHD). Best Start aims to improve the health, development, learning and wellbeing of all Victorian children from pregnancy through transition to school (0-8 years).

All the sites have in place local partnerships that are the cornerstone of the Best Start approach and are expected to develop partnerships with Aboriginal communities and lead the way in implementing strategies that are culturally relevant and respectful of the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal communities.

The Aboriginal Best Start Status Report – January 2004 underpins the focus of and direction for all Best Start projects.

This status report was prepared to inform the development of Best Start demonstration projects in relation to Aboriginal children and families.

Three Aboriginal Peak organisations jointly developed this report:

The Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Limited (VACSAL).

The Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO).

The Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Incorporated (VAEAI).

In partnership with Department of Human Services (DHS) and Department of Education and Training (DET), The Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA) was also included on the Aboriginal Best Start Reference Group (ABSRG).

The knowledge and expertise of each partner ensured a collaborative and holistic project.

VACSAL have received funding to undertake the lead role in the state-wide development of Aboriginal Best Start in collaboration with the Office for Children and the Aboriginal Early Years Advisory Committee. VACSAL has worked in partnership with the Best Start sites and partners.
